The Balancing Act of the Moment

Sunset Grass Field, originally uploaded by IainBuchanan.

A thought just struck me last evening. I was wandering through our field with the warm wind whispering over my skin, watching the grass tinged by the setting sun, thinking that this must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. But isn't every moment beautiful, in some way? And if not beautiful, then interesting, and if not interesting, educational, and if not educational, unique. When we look ahead in our lives and see gorgeous vistas of opportunity or a grand chance for happiness, we are apt to leap forward, to focus solely on the future and forget about the present in our anticipation.

Why not slow down and look at where we are now? Savor the moment. You'll never have the chance again. September 6, 2010 will only come once in the lifetime of the world.

And yet...we must move ahead. Because it is only after going forward that we can fully grasp the beauty of the place we have just left. As we move away from mundane point A to the promising point B, we look back and begin to realize just how beautiful point A really was.

So--as with so many things--it is a balance. We must move between holding the precious moment close, and letting it go to step into a golden future.

Where are you right now?

  1. I need to thank you so much!! This post has been such an encouragement for me. I've really been in a rut lately thinking about how I can just make it through the day...but this post put everything in retrospect.
